About Sun's Collaboration

The Java programming language is a valuable skill for today's students. Sun is excited to be collaborating with Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Kent, and Deakin University to bring new and innovative tools that make learning to program fun for students everywhere.

Alice

Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. Alice is a freely available teaching tool designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming.
» Alice is available for free from Carnegie Mellon University at Alice.org

Greenfoot

Greenfoot is a combination of a framework for creating two-dimensional grid assignments in Java and an integrated development environment (class browser, editor, compiler, execution, etc.) suitable for novice programmers, specifically high school levels and up through advanced university courses. While Greenfoot supports the full Java programming language, it is especially useful for programming exercises that have a visual element. In Greenfoot, object visualization and object interaction are the key elements. Greenfoot is maintained by Deakin University, University of Kent and the community.
