Why does Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 crash after I visit a web page with Java applets?

SYMPTOMS

While using an Internet Explorer 9 browser and visiting a Web page containing applets, the browser crashes.


CAUSE

Here are some of the reasons that might cause Internet Explorer 9 to crash.

For Java applets to run on Internet Explorer 9 browser, you need to have Java version Java 6u24 or higher.

  • You are not running latest version of Java
  • Compatibility View Settings in IE 9 might be disabled

SOLUTION

Following are the proposed steps to resolve this issue.
  1. Install the latest version of Java:
    • Get the latest version
      Java version Java6u24 has resolved the issue revolving around ActiveX filtering feature in IE 9. Hence the Java applets should be running fine with this release.
  2. Enable Compatibility view settings in IE 9
    • Open IE 9 browser
    • Click on Tools tab
    • Click on Compatibility view settings option
    • Click on Add button
    • Add the website
